As the Kenyan winter sets in and the temperatures drop, Nairobi finds itself grappling with the annual bout of the flu. This highly contagious viral infection spreads rapidly, affecting individuals of all ages. As the flu continues to spread, it is crucial for everyone, especially those with little ones, to stay informed and take necessary precautions to safeguard their health and prevent further spread.

The flu, or influenza, is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, and can also be contracted by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the face.

Symptoms of the flu may include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, fatigue, and headache. While most flu cases are mild and resolve on their own, it can lead to severe complications, especially for vulnerable populations such as young children, elderly individuals, pregnant women, and those with underlying health conditions.

In Nairobi, health authorities have noticed an increase in flu cases in recent weeks, and the situation demands immediate attention. With a large population and bustling urban centers, Nairobi is easily a hotbed for viral transmission. If you are on social media, you may have definitely seen pediatricians as well as various motherhood and parenting influencers mention this particular flu that is affecting parents as well.

“ a couple of weeks ago, I was called by my son’s school because he had a very high fever and was vomiting. I previously thought it was just a cough that would subside. By the time we got him to the hospital he had convulsed but luckily the doctors managed to get his fever down and administer treatment. I am currently nursing a sore throat and a cough,” said Wambui, a mother to a 6 year old and an AfyaRekod employee.

To control the outbreak and protect yourself and others, consider the following preventive measures:

  1. Get Vaccinated: The flu vaccine is the most effective way to prevent the flu and reduce its severity if you do get infected. Consult with healthcare professionals to ensure you receive the appropriate vaccine for the current flu strains.
  2. Practice Good Hygiene: Frequent handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds can help reduce the spread of the virus. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available.
  3. Cover Your Mouth and Nose: Always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing. This prevents the virus-laden droplets from spreading to others.
  4. Avoid Crowded Places: As much as possible, avoid crowded gatherings, especially if you are feeling unwell or if there is a known flu outbreak in your area.
  5. Stay Home When Sick: If you develop flu-like symptoms, stay at home to prevent infecting others. Rest, drink plenty of fluids, and seek medical attention if necessary.
  6. Clean and Disinfect: Regularly clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, light switches, and electronics, to reduce the risk of virus transmission.
  7. Boost Your Immunity: Maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating nutritious foods, staying physically active, and getting enough sleep. Hydrate as well. A strong immune system can help your body fight off infections effectively. Consider taking supplements like vitamin C or zinc after consulting with a healthcare professional. Remember, a healthy body is better equipped to fight off viruses and infections.
  8. Watch out for severe symptoms. If you develop chest pain, shortness of breath, difficulty in breathing and chest congestion, you might be developing pneumonia. See a doctor.

While the flu may be making its rounds in Nairobi, the above proactive steps can help mitigate its impact. Taking care of our health is not only essential for our well-being but also for the well-being of the entire community. Remember the ‘herd-immunity’ theory? It applies here as well.
